TASHKENT – Authorities have begun investigating the Neftgasmontazh construction firm, which felled trees planted in Tsarist times in Tashkent’s Amir Timur square, CA-news.org reported March 9.

They are also investigating the role of the city’s department of public services and utilities in the matter.

Crews cut down the trees, planted in 1874, last November. At the time, critics of the tree-felling said that officials wanted to increase the visibility of the recently completed Palace of Forums.

Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyaev reportedly ordered the inquiry.
