Three Kazakhs sentenced on terrorism charges
ASTANA -- Aktobe Court No. 2 has sentenced three residents of the Aktiubinsk oblast to seven years of imprisonment in accordance with article 233-2 of the Kazakh criminal code for "creation and leadership of a terrorist group", according to Interfax-Kazakhstan.
According to the investigation, the young Kazakhs planned to take part in terrorist acts in Dagestan. However, Russian customs officers detained them and extradited them to Kazakhstan. In the course of the investigation, authorities recovered from them notes, letters, cell phones and fragments of paper bearing calls to jihad.
The news agency notes that in April 2009 the Almalinsk regional court in Almaty convicted five members of Hizb ut-Tahrir, a religious-extremist group banned in Kazakhstan.
