DUSHANBE – The Supreme Court of Tajikistan convicted 56 defendants of belonging to the banned extremist organisation Tablighi Jamaat, Asia-plus.tj reports March 10.

The court gave 23 defendants prison sentences ranging from three to six years and fined the others.

While Tablighi Jamaat does not call for establishment of Islamic governments, it is linked by some to terrorist groups. The Kyrgyz government banned the organisation in 2006.
