Tajik Aluminium Company promotes national sports
The Tajik Aluminium Company TALKO will sponsor all athletes representing Tajikistan in international competitions for the next four years.
TAJIKISTAN — The Tajik Aluminium Company TALKO will sponsor all athletes representing Tajikistan in international competitions for the next four years, the government’s Youth, Sports, and Tourism Committee Chairman Maliksho Negmatov revealed on Oct. 12.
He said TALKO will also sponsor the participation of athletes in training programmes, finance athletic equipment purchases and restore and repair sports fields and stadiums. The value of the sponsorship will be approximately half a million U.S. dollars a year.
Negmatov added that companies have helped athletes in specific international competitions in the past, but their support generally did not continue into the next season and therefore did not contribute to improving the skills and capabilities of individual competitors or national sports teams.
Representatives of various sports organisations claim that sports are in critical condition in Tajikistan. Association of Sports Writers Chairman Narzullo Latipov contended that the country lacks the conditions to develop major sports. It has serious problems equipping sports teams and sports centres. Another major problem, he said, is the drain of qualified individuals, who usually seek to advance their athletic careers abroad.
The association welcomed TALKO’s initiative as a partial contribution to addressing these issues, but asserted that investment on an even larger scale in sports is needed to resolve them.
