ASTANA – A June 24 attack on a Kazakhstani border guard in South Kazakhstan Oblast left a civilian bystander dead, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported June 25.
Five assailants left their car at the Yntymak border outpost in the border force’s Saryagash unit’s jurisdiction and attacked a lieutenant, trying to drag him into their car, the border force told Novosti-Kazakhstan.
The officer was able to fire, causing them to flee. A local resident was wounded by the gunfire and died at the hospital. The border guard was treated for his injuries.
The incident comes after a mass desertion at one Kazakhstani border outpost and a mass murder at another.
